In this blog entry by Donna Dederding from Zumtobel, she explores how Zumtobel and Tridonic were able to develop a car park lighting solution in Qatar.

The challenge was to make SLOTLIGHT suitable for outdoor use in the harsh conditions of dust and high ambient temperature in Qatar. With the support of Tridonic and the use of TALEXX Crystal chain, as well as the expertise of the Custom Product Department in Dornbirn, a solution using the SLOTLIGHT body with the TALEXX IP67 modules inside could be offered. This allowed to maintain uniformity and lux levels as per the designer's intentions.

The Public Works Authority (PWA) Ashghal was established in 2004 to manage and coordinate the planning, design, procurement, construction, delivery and asset management of all infrastructure projects and public buildings in Qatar. The authority has allocated 3,500 square metres of land for car parking, strategically located in the centre of West Bay Downtown, near Ashghal's West Bay building. The intention was to develop a purpose-built car park building to serve the head office. The design incorporates a full precast solution to address the various site constraints and to help support rapid construction.
The lighting design firm IDEP Consultant International has already worked with Zumtobel on various projects in the past and approached them once again for the car park project in Qatar. The design brief included a plan for continuous lines in the car park to help guide drivers through the area. The consistent linear design of SLOTLIGHT was the perfect solution for this brief. However, the electrical construction of the luminaire had to be customised because of the high ambient temperatures in Qatar.
Collaboration between Tridonic and Zumtobel
Together with the Custom Product Department a solution using the SLOTLIGHT IP54 housing and a Tridonic Talexx IP65 chain inside the luminaires was developed. This joint venture between Tridonic and Zumtobel enabled the team to meet the design requirements stipulated by the consultant whilst still making sure that the solution can withstand extreme temperatures.
Ghadi Abou Zeid, Head of Business Development MEIA: "The lighting designer was looking for a different and attractive design for this public parking. Being a loyal client of Zumtobel, she picked the SLOTLIGHT as a solution, with the concept of maintaining consistency in closed and open spaces. The challenge was to make the SLOTLIGHT suitable for outdoor use in the harsh conditions of dust and high ambient temperature in Qatar. With the support of Tridonic and the use of TALEXX Crystal chain, as well as the expertise of CPD Dornbirn, we were able to come with a solution of using the SLOTLIGHT body with the TALEXX IP67 Modules inside, that allows us to maintain uniformity and lux levels as per the designer's intentions. The outcome was a very attractive and clean design using a Zumtobel Group approach, and Zumtobel Group executed solution."
