ITRI Develops Pocket-sized UV LED Chopstick Sanitizer

Eating out has become increasingly commonplace in today’s busy life. This has triggered an urgent need for a sanitizing product that is portable, environmentally friendly, and leaves no chemical residue. ITRI developed a one-of-a-kind "Pocket Chopstick Sanitizer," which in just 90 seconds can kill 99.99% of E.coli and other pathogens. This innovation wins the COMPUTEX Best Choice Award 2016 and will be unveiled on May 31 at COMPUTEX Taipei.

The cleanliness of chopsticks is something frequently neglected during meals. Chopsticks that aren’t completely cleaned and stored in a proper environment or are used past their expiration date can easily become a hotbed of bacterial growth. Mold, E.coli, and staphylococcus aureus can be ingested through the use of contaminated chopsticks, presenting a threat to one’s health.

ITRI has developed the world’s first deep ultraviolet LED sterilization box, “Pocket Chopstick Sanitizer,” providing a convenient means for travelers, people who often eat out, office workers, and students to sterilize chopsticks within just 90 seconds. The device kills 99.99% of E.coli and other pathogenic microorganisms, enabling people to enjoy their meals without worrying about using contaminated chopsticks.

The “Pocket Chopstick Sanitizer” employs a compact UVC LED light disinfection module patented by ITRI, which features high radiation intensity via laser-like reflective-projection technology and omnidirectional light irradiation. Smart sensors have also been integrated into the device to ensure safe use. Key parts are detachable for easy cleaning. User-friendly operation together with an attractive, lightweight design makes it easy to store in a pocket or purse.

From May 31 to June 4, ITRI will display many innovative technologies at COMPUTEX Taipei 2016, including a high-precision automated 3D scanning system that can complete a full-body 3D scan in just 40 seconds. The other technologies to be unveiled include interactive virtual projection technology allowing for playing a piano without keys on top of a desktop. Visitors are encouraged to come to the ITRI pavilion to experience these latest technologies.
