Epistar Obtains Achievement in IP After Years of Efforts

For more than 20 years since Epistar’s founding in 1996, Epistar has focused on research and development of innovative LED solutions, and the protection of its intellectual property assets. Epistar devoted considerable resources in developing its LED technology over the years, and built a sizable patent portfolio around its innovations. To date, Epistar has over 4000 patents and patent applications.

One area of the technologies Epistar has focused on is the innovation of LED filament bulbs that broke the stereotype of LED technology. Epistar’s research and development efforts in LED filament bulbs leads this revolutionary trend, leading to a number of pioneering patents including, but not limited to, U.S. Patent No. 6,346,771 entitled “High Power LED Lamp,” U.S. Patent No. 7,489,068 entitled “Light Emitting Device,” U.S. Patent No. 7,560,738 and titled “Light-Emitting Diode Array Having An Adhesive Layer,” and U.S. Patent No. 8,791,467 entitled “Light Emitting Diode And Method Of Making The Same” that cover filament technologies; and U.S. Patent No. 8,240,881 entitled “Light-Emitting Device Package,” U.S. Patent No. 9,065,022 entitled “Light Emitting Apparatus” that cover filament bulb technologies.  Industry leaders such as Super Trend Lighting and Q L Light Source have already obtained licenses to the patents identified above. There is no other company that is licensed to all of the above-identified patents by press time.

In an effort to further develop and protect its proprietary technologies, Epistar has acquired additional patents to enhance its patent portfolio, including an exclusive license obtained from University of California, Santa Barbara, UCSB, U.S. for Patent No. 7,687,813 to Dr. Shuji Nakamura and Dr. Steven P. DenBaars entitled “Standing Transparent Mirrorless Light Emitting Diode.”

The protection of intellectual property and its continuing investment in research and development activities are keys to Epistar’s success. Epistar believes that the emphasis and recognition of intellectual property will improve product performance, generate additional investment opportunities, and propel the industry for more innovation as a whole.
