Numerous orders are flowing to 3D sensing component suppliers including Lumentum and Win Semiconductor because of the boom in 3D sensing in 2018. Placed by Apple and other application makers, those orders are bringing fortune to suppliers.
B. Riley senior analyst Dave Kang cited in his report that Lumentum produces VCSEL, the key component of 3D sensing capabilities, including the iPhone X’s face ID. He projected 2018 will be huge and critical for 3D sensing and Lumentum could reach a price target of USD 89, reported Barron’s.
GaAs parts supplier Win Semiconductor said on January 4th that its sales for December surged 80%. Kang pointed out the popularity of GaAs was a consequence of the manufacturing of VCSELs by Lumentum.
Samsung also considers to adopt facial recognition in its phones for users to unlock their devices. The company last Thursday launched Exynos 9810 chipset that supports 3D sensing capabilities.
With the comments made by Lumentum and the prediction of future demand for the function, Kang expected Lumentum, Finisar and II-VI will benefit from the trend.
