Typically, luminaire manufacturers’ only option for LED light engines are standard Recognized devices that require additional evaluation by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) for changes made by the manufacturer. In many cases, this results in the need to perform additional testing, delaying time to market and increasing costs. With the expansion of Intertek’s Class P program, manufacturers can now source and incorporate different LED light engines of the same Class P Listed rating into lighting products without retesting each time a new light engine is used.

Carl Bloomfield, Global Director of Lighting at Intertek, commented: “At Intertek, our commitment to Total Quality Assurance means we’re always looking for ways to help our customers find innovative solutions to bring their products to market in a timely, cost-effective way. As the industry has seen continuous changes in LED sources, it has been met with both opportunities and challenges and we’re thrilled to expand our Class P program to include LED light engines. By building upon this successful program, we can provide our lighting customers more convenience as they develop new products.”

In 2014, Intertek expanded its Class P Listed offering to include LED drivers in addition to fluorescents ballasts, which were previously the only products with Class P Listed status in the industry. This allowed manufacturers of LED luminaires a more simplified certification process, giving them the opportunity to more easily launch products that meet safety requirements for the North American marketplace. Intertek was the first NRTL to offer Class P Listed status LED drivers, and is the first to expand the program to include LED light engines.
