[Display Week 2018 Show Report]- Nobel Prize Winner Developed Nanorods LED for Future Display

At Display Week 2018, the flourish of Micro LED can be seen from the keynote speech on the opening day. During the speech, Zhang Deqiang, the CEO of Visionox has discussed the technical prospect of OLED, and Douglas Lanman, Ph.D of Oculus Research was also on spot to discuss the eye-tracking technology in VR device. In addition, among correlated persons and experts in display field, SID specially invited Hiroshi Amano, a Nobel Prize Winner, to share the development situation of Micro LED technology in the future.

Apart from sharing his view on the application prospect of LED used in various energy-saving fields, Professor Hiroshi Amano also specially discussed Nanorods LED in the display field. He believes that this technology is likely to become an option for display in the future. Especially when the display resolution of future consumer electronics is required to increase to 8K, chip dimension of Micro LED should be smaller than 1µm so as to match with the display of cellphone. Whether QD or phosphor is used, it will face considerably a big technical obstacle to achieve coating to achieve color conversion on such a tiny chip.

Therefore, the technical team in Japan is now conducting a research on Nanorods LED, expecting to generate three different colors, RGB, directly on the chip structure by Nanorods LED (as shown below).

Certainly, such technology will subvert the existing LED production process, so the equipment that grows epi wafer is required to be modified. However, as for the mode of growing epi wafer structure, structure with dissimilar materials should be slowly grown through the interlace mode between injection and interruption. The intention is to achieve RGB full-color light on one wafer. Then, when can this highly advanced technology come true? Let’s hope to see it during our lifetime!
