The Progress Expectation of Mini LED in 2H18

Mini LED as an enhanced version of conventional LED backlight has been considered as a transitional technology between conventional LED and Micro LED. According to the estimation of LEDinside, the revenue of Mini LED products is expected to reach US$689 million by 2022. Before the second half of 2018 started, many LED companies have reported their progress and shipping schedule of Mini LED products including applications of automotive lighting and mobile devices.

EVERLIGHT: Mini LED on automotive lighting and mobile devices scheduled in Q4

The Taiwanese LED packaging company announced that the samples of Mini LED products have been delivered and the mass production will be in Q4 with application on automotive lighting and handheld devices. The CEO of EVERLIGHT, Robert Yeh, revealed the company’s focuses on high margin products and expected higher revenue in 2H18.

Innolux: Mini LED display has the potential to replace OLED

Innolux reported its Mini LED public information display will be released by the end of 2018. With its technology of AM Mini LED, the company is optimistic about the application of Mini LED on large size panels and expects that Mini LED has the potential to replace OLED in the coming 10 years as Mini LED display performs better but with lower cost. Innolux with its parent company, Foxconn, recently announced the acquisition of shares in the U.S. based TV brand Vizio. The investment will increase the outlet of Innolux.

Epistar: Progressing to solve technological issues of Mini LED

The LED chip maker Epistar disclosed that the company has connected with clients of different applications and processed Mini LED as planned but currently faces issues of yield and the cost of repair. Epistar expects to tackle the problems by working with its client to develop the technology of Mini LED automatic repair and transition. The company hopes to release solutions by the end of 2018 and to process the verification by 2019 for mass production. As there are still technological obstacles to be overcome, Epistar said the contribution of Mini LED will be limited in 2018.

Unity-Opto: Mini LED is the focus for 2H18

In the annual meeting of shareholders, Unity-Opto announced its decision to increase its capital, planning to strategically cooperate with its partner and to promote its products. The company said its Mini LED products have finished the process of verification and will be the key products for the company’s revenue.

Harvatek: Mini LED going through verification and shipping

Harvatek, a Taiwan-based LED packaging company, developed a Mini COB product putting four Mini LEDs in one package. The product could be applied in LED display and has started to be delivered. The company reported that its Mini LED for mobile phone application is under the process of verification.

AUO: Mini LED panels expected to launch in Q4

AUO demonstrated Mini LED backlight products in different sizes at Display Week 2018 including the small 2-inch display for VR, 6-inch one for mobile devices and 15.6-inch panels for notebooks. According to Michael Tsai, the CEO of AUO, the company has provided samples of Mini LED backlight panels for gaming display and may start delivering the products in 4Q18.
