Nichia considered that in 2H18, the competition between LED makers will still go on due to the excess capacity of LED backlight and the weak market demands in the past two quarters. As the prices of LED chips and packaging has been down for years, there might be more acquisitions between corporates and some collapses for small and medium sized manufacturers. Generally speaking, 2018 is a tough year for the LED industry.
For Nichia, automotive lighting, laser and mobile backlight products are the major growth drivers in 2018. Nichia has developed upgraded automotive lighting products to correspond to new headlight designs. The company has kept improving its laser power. In addition, Nichia broke though the technical bottlenecks and developed 0.3t LED which fulfills the mobile market’s demands in full screen, ultra-thin and HDR. The product has been promoted to its clients and the manufacturing will increase this year.

Speaking of the progress of Mini LED, Nichia is ready to mass produce Mini LED products, said Takashi Sakamoto, Principal Technical Officer of Optoelectronics Products at Nichia. According to Sakamoto, the company has solid plan for its clients with Mini LED backlight applications. As for Micro LED, Nichia is capable of producing experimental products; however, Sakamoto expected that it will take at least four years to commercialize Micro LED and to enter the mass manufacturing phase. Nichia as the world premier LED maker has been working on Micro LED for a long time. Aside from making its own Micro LED chips, the company also develops transfer technology and related equipment.
Focusing on the six major obstacles of Micro LED manufacturing process, LEDinside invited experts of the industry to share their insights on Micro LED technology breakthroughs and its application trend in Micro LEDforum 2018.
