Dutch Company Selects Plessey’s LED Horticultural Lighting to Grow Lettuce

The UK based company, Plessey, has announced its partnership with B-Four Agro, a Dutch lettuce grower, to provide its growing lights to a new greenhouse owned by its subsidiary company, B4Hydrogrow B.V, which measures 29,000 square meters.

The under construction greenhouse of B4Hydrogrow will be installed with Hyperion 1750 LED Grow Light, which offers a light output of 1750 micromole/s, equivalent to a 1000W SON-T. The whole series of Hyperion grow lights come in a range of standard and tailor made spectrums, with a host of features and benefits designed to give a higher commercial return to growers.

B-Four Agro, as a vegetable provider to the food processing industry, has planned to switch its outdoor growing methods to hydroponic approaches in indoor greenhouses. The company has invested a new greenhouse facility under its new subsidiary company, B4Hydrogrow.

By deploying 100 percent LED lighting, B4Hydrogrow aims to fully implement the growing space and to get the largest yield and the highest-quality lettuces with the specific wavelengths of light available with Plessey’s Hyperion grow light. LED lightings also generate less heat compared with SON-T lamps and could save up to 40 percent energy.

Maarten Klein, Plessey’s Head Agronomist said, “Using LED lighting in lettuce growing is proven to be very successful, due to the fact that SON-T emits a lot of radiant heat. This warms the plant temperature to levels which are unfavorable for quality and sturdy lettuce crops. With the use of the Hyperion LED, the grower can maximize production capacity by using artificial light in times when greenhouse temperature is critical.”
