PlayNitride Plans to Raise $100M for Micro LED Production; Konka Group to Dive into Micro LED R&D with $211M

Micro LED technology is seeing commercialization in one or two years with wearable products and large size displays leading the way. Taiwan-based Micro LED company PlayNitride is planning to increase investment for Micro LED product production while China-based Konka Group also announced to put RMB 1.5 billion (US$ 211 million) in Micro LED research and development.

PlayNitride teamed up with RiTdisplay to jointly develop PM Micro LED product for wearable applications with trial production starting this year and mass production expected in 2020. Seeing the rising market, PlayNitride plans to increase funds for volume production.

Charles Li, CEO and chairman of PlayNitride noted that the company has raised US$50 million in the first quarter of 2019 and is preparing for the next fundraising for reaching over US$100 million funds. The funds will be used to build a volume production line processing Micro LED epitaxy wafers, chips, mass transfer process or even module manufacture.

The production line is planned to set in Taiwan and is expected to begin operation in the second half of 2020.

The Konka Group based in Shenzhen, China reported the establishment of a Micro LED research institute jointly with Chongqing’s Liang Shan investment company. The new project will invest RMB 1.5 billion (US$ 211 million) for Micro LED R&D and production. With its TV business, the company sees that Micro LED technology will be a critical technology for new display products.

Figo Wang, Research Director of LEDinside, commended that display technologies are critical for TV producers as they aim to build integrated supply chain for next-gen display applications. As a result, several Chinese TV makers are increasing their investment in display technology in order to take the leading role in the market.
