PlayNitride and ITRI Sign on a Cooperation Project to Focus on Micro LED

PlayNitride and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) signed on a long-term collaboration project at a press conference last week. In addition, Epistar’s Chairman Biing-Jye Lee and AUO’s President Frank Ko also attended the conference.

Being the only Micro LED design company in Taiwan, PlayNitride has done many rounds of fundraising. Its CEO Charles Lee is the most important person of the company. In addition, because Epistar acquired ForEpi, Epistar has been its large shareholder holding 20% of PlayNitride. With strong shareholders such as UMC and Korean companies, PlayNitride’s dynamics can be quite eye-catching in the industry even without public offering.

PlayNitride’s marketing department has issued the invitation, and the press conference has been held on December 24. Their cooperation plan and future outlook of the industry were released. Besides, Epistar’s Chairman Biing-Jye Lee and AUO’s President Frank Ko also came to the conference.

PlayNitride was founded in 2016. The registered capital is NTD 500 million, and the paid-in capital is NTD 292 million. According to its registered development history, PlayNitride set its first Micro LED mass production line in July 2019. Due to its employee growth and production demand, it has expanded the production line and office in Zhunan.

Charles Lee once has mentioned on a forum that Micro LED’s cost is expected to be lowered by 95% in five years. Catching up with OLED can be possible. In 2021, the chip size is expected to be reduced by 50%.

According to TrendForce, in the future, Micro LED display technology is expected to enter the market from small headwear AR, wearable display, automotive display, high-end TV and large commercial display. It will have the chance to slowly enter the market of medium-sized tablet, NB and desktop display. Micro LED has the most powerful growth for the large display market, mainly due to lower technology threshold. In 2024, for Micro LED TV and large display applications, the chip value is expected to achieve USD 2.3 billion.
