LEDinside, Taiwan LED industry research institute, estimates Taiwan’s streetlight market to show perspective business valued at around NT$40-50 billion for the Taiwan’s LED firms due to the government’s plan to spend NT$200-300 million to install LED streetlights on some of the island’s roads in 2009 as demonstration for the use of the new light source in streetlight.
The LED streetlight plan is part of the government’s project to expand market demand in time of recession. Taiwan LED firms include Unity Opto Technology Co., Ltd, Bright LED Electronics Corp., and Foxsemicon Integrated Technology Inc. will benefit from the government plan.
LEDinside estimates LED lights now represents only a minor 3% of global lighting market, with LED streetlights taking up an even smaller portion. In addition, the institute points out that mainland China will become another major market for Taiwan LED-lighting makers because the mainland will likely model Taiwan’s industry standards for LED lighting to draft up its own.
Bright has won contracts to supply Keelung, Fenyuan and Chiayi city governments the lights worth of NT$40 million. Foxsemicon has won a contract to supply Taipei county government 58 LED display screens, which are estimated to inject NT$60 million into the company’s 2009 revenue.
