ROHM Debuts White Chip LED with New Resin Material

ROHM Semiconductor announced the availability of its new white chip LED, SMLD12WBN1W, sized 1608 (1.6x0.8mm). This new package is designed for display panel applications and thus offers superior mountability and long operational life.

In order to meet the increasing standards of displays and visual indicators, high-reliability LEDs are required to guarantee no degradation in luminosity even with continuous operation for over 10 years. Achieving the requirements had been a big challenge with conventional while LEDs that use epoxy or silicone resins for molding. According to ROHM, epoxy or silicone have difficulties providing enough reliability to prevent degradation in luminosity or package strength to facilitate mounting on circuit boards.

ROHM’s new released white LED adopts a new material that combines the benefits of epoxy and silicone resins to achieve reliability to meet the market demands. Tests of the produce have demonstrated that it can maintain 100 percent of its luminosity after operating for 1,000 hours (under 25°C, IF=20mA). Additional tests showed that the package strength was improved 25 times with the new material when compared to products using silicone resin. This will contribute to significantly reducing the occurrence of failures during fabrication when mounting on circuit boards.
