JBD’s Hummingbird MicroLED Projector Broke 6 Lumens Record

Every major breakthrough in augmented reality (AR) has been fueled by innovative technology. Three years ago, the MicroLED projector transformed the industry, transitioning AR from bulky headsets to sleek, lightweight glasses. Now, with JBD’s Hummingbird I MicroLED projector reaching a new milestone at 6 lumens, consumer AR is on the verge of its next significant evolution.

The new Hummingbird I optical module redefines AR capabilities, achieving an unprecedented 6,000 nits of brightness—a level never before seen in AR technology. This breakthrough far surpasses the previous standard of 1,500 nits in diffractive waveguides, setting a new benchmark for AR glasses and marking a historic advance. To further propel the industry forward, JBD is offering development kits for the Hummingbird I module, which are designed to facilitate rapid innovation and integration.

With a remarkable 6,000 nits of brightness, AR usability is revolutionized, delivering clear and vivid visuals even in the brightest outdoor environments. For context, the typical brightness of outdoor grass, which reflects about 1,500 nits, was a challenge for earlier waveguides. This significant leap to 6,000 nits not only overcomes that hurdle but also opens up new possibilities for seamless AR integration into daily life. Imagine walking down a sunny street and clearly seeing navigation arrows guiding you to your destination, with visuals remaining sharp and clear despite the strong ambient light.

This achievement is driven by JBD’s advancements in MicroLED luminous efficiency, significantly boosting the brightness of red, green, and blue micro-display panels. The Hummingbird I delivers up to 6 lumens of luminous flux, achieving a 100% increase in flux at the same power consumption level—a critical factor for high-brightness displays.
The module also leverages JBD’s ARTCs, the industry's first waveguide image quality correction solution. ARTCs plays a key role in eliminating color distortion and graininess, promoting AR images that are both sharp and true to life. The result is over 80% global brightness uniformity and a color difference of ΔE 0.02, which is a significant achievement in ensuring accurate color reproduction and lifelike images.

In summary, the new Hummingbird I optical module represents a revolutionary leap in AR visual experience, offering system-level advantages for AR glasses:

  1.  High Brightness: With 6,000 nits, the module effortlessly handles bright environments, providing an unrestricted visual experience.
  2.  Superior Image Quality: Improved uniformity and color accuracy make diffractive waveguides comparable to array waveguides.
  3.  Extended Battery Life: Enhanced efficiency means lower power consumption, with typical usage at just 150 milliwatts, enabling longer battery life.
  4.  Comfortable Wearability: At a compact 0.4 cubic centimeters, the Hummingbird I provides unparalleled flexibility for comfortable and innovative AR designs.

With its groundbreaking brightness and image quality, JBD’s Hummingbird I optical module is reshaping the AR landscape, addressing longstanding challenges in near-eye displays, and unlocking the full potential of AR as a daily wearable technology. JBD looks forward to partnering with global industry leaders to drive this transformation, ushering in a new era of consumer AR characterized by high brightness, superior image quality, extended battery life, and comfortable wearability.
