[Product News] Samsung Unveils Stretchable Concept Screen with Glasses-Free 3D Effects

News Source:

An Innovation in Display Technology at CES 2025

Samsung Display introduced its stretchable concept screen at CES 2025, showcasing a groundbreaking leap in display innovation. Unlike conventional foldable or flexible displays, this stretchable screen can form a dome-like bulge at its center, producing a glasses-free 3D effect. Potential applications range from wearables to car dashboards and infotainment systems, offering a tantalizing look at the future of interactive displays.

This display is not elastic in the usual sense but achieves its 3D effect through advanced engineering, allowing it to bulge while preserving clarity and color accuracy. During the event, Samsung Display featured visuals such as the Las Vegas Sphere and a shark appearing to burst through the screen, highlighting how the technology creates dramatic visual effects, especially from side angles.

Samsung highlighted the stretchable screen’s potential for animations, 3D maps in automotive navigation, and interactive smartwatch faces, hinting at new possibilities for user engagement with displays.

However, the concept remains in its infancy, raising questions about durability, particularly when it is applied to cars and watches. How resilient the screen is to physical impacts while in its bulged state will likely determine its readiness for consumer devices. Addressing these challenges will be critical to transitioning this concept into a market-ready product.

Samsung Display has a history of unveiling eye-catching concepts at CES, including foldable screens with multiple bends and dual-direction hinges, but many of these innovations have not yet reached the consumer market. The development of this stretchable technology does not ensure its inclusion in the company’s commercial lineup.

While it remains uncertain whether the prototype will reach the market, the demonstration at CES 2025 highlights Samsung Display’s commitment to exploring the boundaries of display innovation. This concept exemplifies the company’s vision for next-generation technologies, opening the door to transformative possibilities in the display industry.
