[News] OSRAM XLS LR6: Innovative LED Light Source for Automotive Rear Lighting Now Ready for Series Production

News Source:

ams OSRAM has reached another important milestone in automotive lighting now that the new OSRAM XLS LR6 LED is ready for series production. This innovative solution enables car manufacturers to create impressive lighting designs with improved safety features, as evidenced by a specially developed prototype for tail lighting, the OSRAM XLS demonstrator.

Back at the start of the year, ams OSRAM launched the third generation of its XLS signal lamp (eXchangeable LED Signal Lamp) – an ECE-standardized platform with more than five different light sources that cover all the major vehicle signal applications, significantly reducing complexity and overall costs for car manufacturers. The company, one of the world’s leading suppliers of optical sensors and emitters, has now brought another important addition to this LED platform to series maturity – the very easy-to-install plug-and-play OSRAM XLS LR6. This new red LED is an ECE R128 standardized light source with an impressive luminous efficacy of 180 lumens, giving manufacturers access to brighter and more efficient lighting solutions. Thanks to its compact format, the OSRAM XLS LR6 is ideal for the slim designs of modern automotive applications. Its robust construction promises reliable performance and greater durability. The design is extremely versatile and can be used for stop, tail and rear fog lights, turn signals, single function lights and center high mount stop lights (CHMSLs).

Proof of concept: the ams OSRAM XLS demonstrator
Long light guides at the rear of vehicles are a global trend that is being adopted by numerous manufacturers for their new vehicles. To showcase the potential applications of ams OSRAM products and especially the new LR6 in long light guides, the company has developed the ams OSRAM XLS demonstrator in accordance with applicable ECE regulations. The prototype consists of two parts: a meter-long light guide with only one LR6 module for the tail light function and a rear light with two light guides, equipped with one LY5 for the turn signal and one LR5 for the tail/brake light function. The two parts together define the style of the rear combination light and the light on the trunk. The prototype was first presented in June this year at an industry event in Detroit where it met with keen interest from attendees and experts.
