Emerging markets such as Thailand, where government policies are spurring the change to greener light sources hold great business opportunities for LED manufacturers. The country’s mega LED streetlight projects are largely supported by the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), and in the form of tradeshows such as EcoLightTech Asia 2014 to encourage businesses to make the upgrade. The country’s high LED growth rates which is projected at a CAGR of 30% in the next five years is attracting many new players, as observed during LEDinside’s recent visit. 

Japanese LED manufacturers that attended EcoLightTech Asia 2014 recently in Bangkok, Thailand were mostly new players in the Thai LED lighting market. Of the four Japanese LED manufacturers LEDinside interviewed, three companies including Sharp had only been in the industry for one year.

In the price sensitive Asian LED market, smart lighting products remain a field where only a few brave vendors have ventured into. The Thai LED lighting market was no exception, and only a handful of smart LED products were displayed at EcoLightTech Asia 2014, which took place recently in Bangkok, Thailand.

A distinctive trend in the Thai LED market reflected at EcoLightTech Asia 2014 was the lack of LED chip, driver and component manufacturers, and the overly dominant presence of LED luminaire manufacturers and traders.
