Embracing new technology- New research by GE Lighting and the Carbon Trust finds that most UK public bodies have begun to adopt intelligent technologies, in order to drive social, economic and environmental benefits within their estates.

LED Roadway Lighting and its partner Silver Spring Networks, Inc., today announced they have been selected by Glasgow City Council to deliver the Intelligent Street Lighting requirements for their innovative Future City Demonstrator initiative. The project will leverage LED street lighting from LED Roadway Lighting's NXT range of luminaires and Silver Spring's IPv6-based smart city networking platform to integrate LED street lights, traffic cameras, and sensors into two adaptive lighting systems in the city center and along the River Clyde's "Clyde Walkway." The adaptive lighting systems will monitor vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic and dynamically dim and increase illumination accordingly, increasing energy efficiency, urban sustainability and improving citizen safety.

The new lighting system will be in place for the coming campaign with the club moving in line with Premier League requirements for a higher level of light output. 

The Warrington Borough Council and Liverpool City in UK have announced plans of upgrading current streetlights to LEDs respectively, according to various UK media reports.

LED street lights have not been welcomed with open arms by UK suburbanites. Yet another report by a UK based newspaper reports citizens protesting against LED street light installations in neighborhoods.

Standing in Poole, Dorset, England, the Twin Sails Bridge is the second road linking from Poole town center to Hamworthy. It is a lifting bridge which being designed in a pair of the sail-like triangular lifting leaves. Completed in April 2012, the bridge spans across the backwater channel in Holes Bay and the purpose is to connect four major sites together for vehicles. This is a project which began 30 years ago and Poole’s civic leaders believe their new Twin Sails Bridge is the key to regenerate the town. Lighting designers from Speirs + Major undertook the lighting design task and encountered challenges -- how to use light to encourage people to engage with the structure after dark, how to create a beautiful civic feature both when the bridge is open and closed.

The St. Botolph Building, over 500,000 sq ft space with 14 stories high, is one of the largest office development in the City of London. Speirs + Major was appointed by Minerva plc to design the lighting scheme for the internal public area: the reception, central lift core, outer stair cores and atrium.

A new facility for GaN, the key material needed to make LEDs, has set up in Cambridge, enabling researchers to expand and accelerate their pioneering work in the field.
