The price of blue LED chips has dropped to almost half compared to the price last year, putting a great pressure on many manufacturers. The price of 4-inch wafer has fallen from US$ 22 in 1Q17 to around US$ 15 in 1Q18. As the cost is about US$ 15, the decrease of price could lead to deficit for LED chip makers.

Epistar showcased for the first time LED chips for projectors at Taiwan International Lighting Show 2015 (TILS 2015) that took place in Taipei, Taiwan recently. Global LED package market is estimated to achieve US $14.6 billion in 2014, and grows at a CAGR of 3.2% during 2014-2018. Among all LED applications, LED lighting has the highest estimated revenue of US $4.8 billion in 2014, soaring with a CAGR of 12%. These figures suggest that LED lighting market has entered a high growth phase. Nevertheless, the prices of LED lighting products, such as lighting bulbs and tubes show a steady downfall trend.

Another challenging year awaits Taiwanese manufacturers as major Chinese LED chip manufacturer San’an Opto acquires a total of 100 MOCVD reactors in September and December and have said that the company will continue to headhunt Taiwanese experts, according to a report of China Times.

Under the terms of this agreement, Mr. Han will acquire a 15% interest in SemiLEDs common stock at a purchase price of $1.00 per share for a total consideration of $5.0 million and will join the SemiLEDs Board of Directors upon closing of the transaction.

LG Innotek, a global components manufacturer, today announced that the company succeeded in the mass-production of the world’s highest power 275nm UV (ultraviolet) LEDs. Such success is expected to trigger an explosion of UV LEDs for purification and sterilization applications.

China based San’an Optoelectronics (San’an Opto) has signed a three year cooperative agreement with Honglitronics on June 24 in hopes of increasing domestic market share in the LED market. 

Earlier this week, a securities firm reported that several areas in China will begin raising LED chip prices in May due to recent adjustments to the LED chip market infrastructure in China. The report continued that the supply shortage is anticipated to intensify, which will cause a price hike in all LED chips. San’an Optoelectronics (San’an Opto) announced on April 16, 2014 that the company has signed a three year strategic agreement to sell LED chips to Foshan Nationstar (Nationstar).

Hitachi Cable, Ltd. has announced the development of a high-power red LED chip*1 offering a maximum luminous flux of 55 lumens*2,*3. This luminous flux was enabled by increasing the size of the LED chip and use of a fine line electrode structure.

To accommodate the booming demand of LED panels, leading panel maker, AU Optronics Corp, has decided to invest over $900 million to build four LED chip production plants under its subsidiary Lextar in Central Taiwan Science Park. The project is slated to begin in the fourth quarter this year, and it is expected to start production by the end of 2010. Lextar Chairman H.B. Chen indicated that going forward, Lextar’s role in supplying AUO’s LED chip demand will become increasingly important.
