EVERLIGHT Electronics Co., Ltd. (EVERLIGHT) on June 10, 2017 filed a patent infringement action against Bridgelux, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. EVERLIGHT is claiming that Bridgelux infringes U.S. Patent Nos. 6,335,548 and 7,253,448 by manufacturing and selling infringing LED products, including for example the Bridgelux 2835 series.

On 13 June 2017 the Zumtobel Group opened the first showroom displaying the international lighting group’s entire product range. In collaboration with the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, the Zumtobel Group has created a space over approximately 250 square metres in which light can be experienced in all its diverse areas of application. The display is located in the Swedish city of Malmö, which is already home to Zumtobel Group’s main sales office for the Nordic region. The site is now being extended with the showroom in the same building.

Prices of LED replacement light bulbs dipped slightly but on the whole remained steady in May, according to LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. Compared with April, the global ASP of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs fell by 1.9% in May to US$6.5. According to Japanese media Nikkei, major LED manufacturer Nichia Corporation plans to invest around 22 billion Japanese yen (about US$197 million) by the end of 2020 to build a new laser diode (LD) factory at its current production base. LD can be used as a light source for projectors, endoscopy and headlights. The Japanese LED maker’s goal is to increase current LD production capacity by at least three-fold by 2020.

(SIPO) has dismissed every aspect of the claim, filed on November 2, 2016, by China’s Intematix Suzhou Lighting Co., Ltd.* 1 (Intematix Suzhou Lighting), requesting for the invalidation of the Chinese patent (No. ZL201110066517.7; “the patent”* 2 ) for red phosphor, a material used extensively in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), owned by MCC and NIMS. The board approved the validity of the patent, and MCC and NIMS received the written decision effective May 10. 

Tri-State LED, a division of Revolution Lighting Technologies, today announced it has recently completed an LED lighting retrofit for AERCO International, Inc., a leading manufacturer of commercial condensing boilers, high efficiency water heaters and energy recovery solutions. The retrofit occurred throughout the company’s corporate headquarters, including their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, located in Blauvelt, New York, retrofitting existing lighting that is expected to reduce the facility’s lighting energy use by more than 65%.

Operating in Turkey for 87 years, Philips Lighting has installed the first Philips ArenaVision LED pitch lighting system in Turkey at the Sinan Erdem Arena. Energy efficient pitch and stand lighting was installed at the sports arena ahead of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four on May 19-21. Lumileds announced the appointment of Steve Barlow as Senior Vice President (SVP) of its Illumination Business, effective May 22. Barlow rejoins Lumileds from Cree, Inc., where he served as SVP of sales and business development, responsible for the lighting division products, channels and revenue growth. 

Elemental LED, an engineering and technology-based manufacturer of LED lighting solutions, and The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) announced the relocation of Elemental LED’s U.S. manufacturing and R&D operations to Reno, Nevada. The company is moving its corporate headquarters into an adjacent property located in the South Meadows area of Reno and expects to be operational by end of the third quarter of this year. Elemental LED plans to hire up to 100 employees over the next two years.

Power Iluminare has recently joined efforts with Fortius Electromecanica to create a joint venture to supply public lighting for the next 18 years to Zapopan, a city with a population of 1.2 million. The contract for the project has a net worth of more than USD $238,751,010 and will include the installation, maintenance and operation of over 70,000 streetlights.
