It’s reported that the city of OWOSSO is under the investigation of the opportunity of using energy grant funds to install LED lights in some or all of the decorative street lamps downtown.
The city received three different types of LED lights that workers installed on Washington Street, between Main and Exchange streets to explore the possibility.
The city is seeking comment from the community on which lights, if any, are preferred. it is also seeking to inform the public of the benefits of energy efficient lighting.
High upfront costs and the lack of knowledge about their benefits consist of the two biggest reasons for resistance to upgrading to LED’s.
However, many Michigan cities can significantly improve the energy efficiency of their indoor and outdoor lighting, reduce energy consumption and costs, and improve air quality in their communities. It is estimated that the replacement of all of the light fixtures in the lamps downtown could reduce the city’s annual electrical bill by as much as $15,000 per year.
