Samsung Launches First Curved Mobile Phone

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. introduced Galaxy Round, the first mobile phone with a curved display last week, the Galaxy Round. With this new curved display technology, Galaxy Round blends the latest smartphone screen innovations with unique design features are blended into Galaxy Round. The smartphone is equipped with a 5.7 inch” Full HD Super AMOLED display 7.9 mm thick and weighs about 154 grams offering comfortable hand grip to users. The phone will first be initially sold in Korea before expanding to foreign markets.


The phone utilizes Samsung’s curved display technology that is ahead of rivals, what Samsung has above rivals such as Apple Inc. and LG Electronics Inc.; curved display technology. The curved screen of the Galaxy Round sets it apart from all other smartphones, keeping Samsung one step ahead of the crowd in the rapidly growing global smartphone market.


The unique curved design gives users a unique round integration experience.  The roll effect for example that enables user to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery easily when the home screen is off. The gravity effect creates visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device. For music, the bounce UX enables users to control their music. When the Galaxy Round’s display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track. For pictures and videos, the side mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt.


The large screen size of the Galaxy Round provides additional benefits to users. Useful one-hand operation features bring a user’s desired controls closer to a preferred side of the screen. The device enables enhanced multitasking capabilities that allow users to fully utilize the larger screen through multi window, a feature where users are able to open more than one application on the screen, run simultaneous multiple instances of the same application or to easily share content between applications.


Although flexible and curved display screens for phones may not see huge sales initially, it is a market to keep an eye on says some analysts. "These phones may not be a game-changer today, but they are definitely an indication of things to come," Manoj Menon, managing Managing director Director of consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. Mr Menon said that as As flexible screens became more advanced and cost-effective to make, it was will likely to speed up growth in the sector, according to thea BBC report cited Menon saying.
