ITRI Flexible Displays on the Road to Commercialization within Two Years

Flexible displays developed by ITRI will be entering mass production within the next two years, a Central News Agency (CNA) report cited Janglin Chen, Vice President of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan saying.

The flexible screen developed by Chen’s research team can be folded in half. Based on ITRI’s current R&D progress it will take another two to three years before the AMOLED screen will be entering mass production.

As the General Director of the ITRI's Display Technology Center, Chen heads the ITRI’s AMOLED, flexible electronic display, and LCD R&D team.

The research team initially developed flexible displays for cloud and mobile device applications, so the devices could be easily put away. The team has successfully developed flexible and energy efficient displays.

Some people think the iPhone screen is too small, but an iPad is too big to carry around, said Chen. The research team decided to design a flexible OLED that could be applied in future smart devices to replace widely used glass screens these days.

ITRI continues to work closely with Taiwanese manufacturers, emphasized Chen. The institute prioritizes sharing research results and forming partnerships with Taiwanese manufacturers. Flexible display developments are nearing mass production phase, all that is missing now is manufacturers with the right technological capacities.

Chen recently received a SID Fellow Award on June 2, 2014, and was recognized for his contributions and works to the development of flexible displays, substrate technology FlexUPD, and thermally rewritable electronic paper i2R e-Paper.
