Hella Introduces Micro LED Lighting System with Over 30,000 Pixels

Automotive lighting and electronics provider Hella announced a new lighting system with high resolution, Digital Light SSL | HD. With the new lighting technology, more than 30,000 pixels can be controlled intelligently and individually, enabling numerous new safety functions like optical lane markings.

According to Hella, "Digital Light SSL | HD" is a consistent further development and miniaturization of existing matrix LED systems. Together with an enlarged light-emitting surface, the s higher number of pixels is the basis for a multitude of new functionalities. The more than 30,000 light points are generated by light sources just the size of a fingernail.

Description of the “miniaturization of matrix LED systems” with more than 30,000 pixels is very similar to the definition of Micro LED-based automotive lights. Earlier this year, Osram also announced its plan to develop automotive LED with 25,600 pixels with pixel pitch of 40 µm. Japanese LED maker also announced its Micro LED-based automotive light with 16,000 pixels. They both addressed that each pixel of the automotive lights can be individually controlled.

Hella noted that the new lighting system has been ordered by a European premium manufacturer for large-scale production and series production will commence in 2022.
