Sharp Reportedly to Mass Product Less-than-1-inch Micro LED Panel in 2023 for Wearable Applications

Sharp, one of the panel providers of Apple, is reportedly developing small size Micro LED displays and will mass produce the products by 2023 for eye-wear smart devices, reported Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun.

According to the report, Sharp Fukuyama Semiconductor, a subsidiary of Sharp, has developed Micro LED prototypes including a 0.38-inch full color panel featuring 1053 PPI and a 0.13-inch blue display with 3000 PPI. The company deploys its proprietary color conversion technology to achieve full color display and aims to mass produce the products in 2023 to 2024 for AR/VR smart glasses display applications.

Sharp utilizes its semiconductor fabrication technology to build blue Micro LED display and convert the blue LEDs into red and green colors with QD color conversion technology. The company also adopts its own “LSW” technology to prevent light leaking from the color conversion layer to achieve pure red and green, realizing full color Micro LED displays.

Other Japan-based display manufacturers such as JDI and Kyocera also focus on middle to small size Micro LED display development. JDI and Kyocera collaborated with Micro LED technology builder glō in 2019 and developed small size Micro LED displays respectively targeting the wearable application market.

Like JDI, Sharp is also part of the panel suppliers of Apple. Their involvements in Micro LED display technology development may prove Apple’s intention of adopting Micro LED technology for its future products.
