  • Berlin's Freie Waldorfschule enjoys high-performance, secure data connectivity through light waves
  • Nine rooms are equipped with custom-built transceivers and USB access keys
  • The school joins a growing number of educational facilities adopting Trulifi worldwide

Eindhoven, the Netherlands – Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, has equipped a Berlin school with Trulifi technology to enable fast, secure data transmission through light waves. Students and teachers at the Freie Waldorfschule in the Prenzlauer Berg district can now enjoy high-speed access to a wide range of online learning resources, independent of a WiFi connection. With this initiative, the school joins educational institutions in Italy, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and the US that are already using Trulifi by Signify.

A secure and reliable Internet connection is not only crucial at work; the education sector also relies increasingly on the benefits of modern connectivity. Signify's Trulifi technology is a dependable alternative to regular Wi-Fi in locations where radio frequencies are not allowed or restricted, or could cause interference, as is often the case in schools. The technology guarantees high transmission rates, which are independent of the radio frequency spectrum and do not suffer from overloads caused by too many devices on the same frequency. The use of USB access keys secures access only to authorized people and devices.

Fast and secure Internet via USB Access Key

Working closely with Signify, the Freie Waldorfschule opted to equip seven classrooms, a conference room, and a science lab with the Trulifi 6002 system. With down and upload speeds of 220 Mbps, the technology provides enough capacity to meet the data needs of all the students in a classroom.

A total of 114 specially designed ceiling-mounted transceivers were installed, laying the foundation for data transmission through light. Since July, the school has been running a test phase to connect the school’s notebooks with the transceivers. As soon as the access key is plugged in, a connection is automatically established – regardless of whether the lighting is on, dimmed, or off. This is one of Trulifi’s unique selling points in the field of LiFi technology. In the future, up to 350 students will be able to benefit from this advanced technology.

Modernizing the school day with Trulifi

"Earlier this summer, we began to equip classrooms with Trulifi by Signify and it has completely replaced the Wi-Fi in these rooms. Data transmission is stable and fast. Even in large classes, the faculty can use it for presentations and the students can use it for research, " said Esther Knoblich, the school’s Managing Director. "The switch from cable or WiFi to LiFi went smoothly, and the faculty could use the new system without having to sit through an elaborate technical introduction. We are particularly pleased that classes now have network access for individual lessons, which remain exclusively within the classroom."

"Comprehensive connectivity is essential for the school day of the future," said Olivia Qiu, Chief Innovation Officer for Signify. "With this in mind, we are very pleased to introduce cutting edge technology into the classroom together with the Freie Waldorfschule am Prenzlauer Berg."

Suitable in many domains

In a world full of online meetings, live streaming, social media, and gaming, Internet connectivity and data communication must be fast, secure, and reliable. Trulifi by Signify, ensuring high-speed connectivity through light, is the perfect solution. Trulifi can also be retrofitted in existing Philips luminaires or installed as a single system.

Trulifi by Signify is highly suitable for use in government, education aerospace and in other areas where wireless connectivity is poor, unavailable, or restricted. LiFi is a technology based on line of sight, making it impossible to eavesdrop or hack into the LiFi network from another room or from outside the building, or hinder the wireless communication.
