glō Continues Micro LED Display Development with High Brightness Displays

glō, the Swedish-American Micro LED company, has been progressing its Micro LED technology since it exhibited the world’s brightest Micro LED display with JDC at Display Week 2018. In 2019, the company showcased four prototypes of Micro LED display including smartwatch display, AR display, HUD and a smartphone-sized panel with Kyocera during Display Week.

The solution of glō features two technology, RGB InGaN Micro LED and direct wafer transfer onto different substrate materials including silicon (CMOS), glass (LTOS) or even flexible substrate. glō produces its RGB Micro LEDs via conventional LED manufacturing equipment and achieved a chip size of 20μm to 1.8μm. Its RGB LEDs can perform wide color gamut (150% NTSC or 120% DCI-P3) and very high brightness.

The company also noted that it is capable of producing displays in various sizes from micro displays for AR glasses or HUD to larger sized display for mobile devices with its direct wafer transfer technology. The Micro LED display prototypes developed by glō include three designs of 1.6-1.86-inch smartwatch displays on LTPS backplane, a 0.7-inch AR display on CMOS backplane and a phone-sized panel on glō’s glass passive backplane.

glō noted that it has formed manufacturing partnerships with one of the largest LED manufacturers to make Micro LEDs and with one of the largest display manufacturers for panel production.

At Display Week 2019, glō partnered with Japanese display company Kyocera to showcase a 1.8-inch Micro LED display on LTPS backplane. Resolution of the display was 256*256 RGB, 200 PPI. Kyocero provided LTPS backplane and driving technology while glō offered its transferring technology and InGaN based RGB LED.
