Foxconn Group Integrates Internal Resources to Boost Mini/Micro LED Display Applications

Sharp’s mass production plan for Micro LED displays marked a progress of the Foxconn Group in next-gen display technology development. Incorporates LED chip production, packaging technology, panel manufacture and TV brands, the Foxconn Group is known for its ambition to set up an internal Micro LED supply chain.

The Micro LED displays developed by Sharp, a 0.38-inch full color panel featuring 1053 PPI and a 0.13-inch blue display with 3000 PPI, were designed by the semiconductor group under Foxconn and manufactured by Sharp Fukuyama Semiconductor.

In addition to Micro LED display technology development, the group also focuses on Mini LED technology. Innolux, the panel maker under Foxconn, has been working on Mini LED based TVs and automotive displays. For TV products, Innolux provides its technology of AM Mini LED for Sharp to build high-end TV portfolio.

As for automotive display, since many automotive manufacturers have found issues with OLED displays like contrast ratio and viewing angle decline, they are now planning to search for alternatives. Innolux thus takes the opportunity to provide its Mini LED sample for leading automakers.

Also under Foxconn, LED packager AOT is shipping Mini LED products and has been integrated with Epileds, the chip maker, to strengthen LED wafer and chip production and capacity. They can also offer products to downstream panel makers within the group.

In fact, since Foxconn took over Sharp and acquire Micro LED startup eLux, it has been integrating its subsidiaries to speed up display technologies including Micro LED and Mini LED. It has also expanded its product portfolio covering wearables, automotive displays, notebook panels, TVs and signage. For now, the Group has reported increasing demands for Mini LED products and formed a solid team for Micro LED display technology.
