Global LiDAR Companies 2019 Progresses: Solid-State LiDAR Manufacturers in the U.S.

Many consider solid-state LiDARs the solution to realize autonomous driving technology as they are much cheaper and lighter compared to mechanical LiDARs.

In 2019, many solid-state LiDAR providers have reported their technology developments and market expansion. Let’s take a look of the latest updates in solid-state LiDARs.

Quanergy Expands Business in Asia and South America

Solid-state LiDAR company Quanergy has been proactively expanding its business in emerging market including META region (Middle East, Turkey, Africa) and APAC region. Quanergy supplied its LiDAR sensors to security solution providers in the Middle East, India and South Korea. It also built a partnership with a Chinese automotive manufacturer Chery Automobile focusing on autonomous driving and smart cities development in China. For the South American Market, Quanergy partners Ingram Micro Brazil to strengthen security and IoT portfolio.

Moreover, Quanergy announced that it has achieved compliance with the automotive standard IATF 16949:2016 and the required automotive core tools and product standards with its solid-state LiDAR sensors.

Cepton Releases Multiple Products and Expand Partnerships for Varied Applications

Cepton have debuted several new LiDAR products and system in 2019 covering smart cities, autonomous driving, mapping and more. Cepton’s LiDARs are based on its proprietary Micro Motion Technology which, according to the company, enables accurate perception with a low cost.

The company partnered machine learning experts MechaSpin to develop LiDAR-based solution for classifying vehicles for automated tolling applications. It also teamed up with ThinkReps, who specializes in physical security solutions, to build up applications for smart cities and IoT industries. As for autonomous driving technology, Cepton began working with autonomous vehicle solution provider Dataspeed.

Cepton continued to expand its business by establishing new offices in Detroit, USA, and Derby, UK. The UK office was set to increase its presence in the EMEIA (Europe, Middle East, India & Africa) area.

Sense Photonics Partners Infineon and Granted Funds for Flash LiDAR Development

Another solid-state LiDAR maker Sense Photonics announced its partnership with Infineon for creating a LiDAR which does not incorporate any moving parts and is capable to offer a wide field of view (FOV).

Sense Photonics has raised US$26 million in its Series A funding round and was granted another £1.9 million grant (US$2.45 million) to build up a R&D center in Edinburgh, UK.

CEO of Sense Photonics, Scott Burroughs, was interviewed by LEDinside and noted that the company is targeting the market of autonomous vehicles and industrial robotics. According to Burroughs, Sense Photonics is aiming to extend its detection range to 200 meters by 2020.
