The Caddy sedans might lose some of their uniqueness in the process.
A new patent filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by General Motors shows that an updated version of the Cadillac CT4-V and possibly the CT5-V will sport markedly different rear designs to the existing model.
As discovered by CarBuzz, the design patent depicts images of a trunk lid with a spoiler attached - this feature leads us to believe that it's the sporty V models that are being shown. But it's below the spoiler that the most significant change can be seen, with a new full-width taillight bar that stretches across the back. This is completely at odds with the current vertically-mounted taillights of the existing sedan, and to be honest, that's a bit of a disappointment.
Cadillac's current crop of V sedans are unique not only for their engaging driving dynamics, but for their designs that don't try too hard to pander to current trends. Full-width taillight bars are all the rage right now, and you can find this styling feature on everything from the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the Toyota Crown and Porsche Cayenne. By going this route, the Caddy sedans may look good but will lose their aesthetic distinctiveness.
Presumed to be facelifts, we will likely see these updated Cadillacs arrive as 2024 models, hopefully later this year. We can also assume that the same design updates will filter through to the standard CT4 and CT5 sedans as well.
As for what else we can expect from the updated CT4-V and CT5-V sedans, that hasn't been established as yet. The former has a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 325 horsepower, and the CT5-V sports a spicy 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 360 hp. Of course, there are also the high-performance Blackwing models above these ones, but those are produced in more limited quantities so it's uncertain if Cadillac will expand production into a new model year.
In both cases, we hope that Cadillac will give the sedans upgraded interiors to go along with their stylish designs and impressively tuned chassis setups. After all, we've seen that the company is capable of creating a classy interior to take on the Germans with the Lyriq.
We hope to learn more about the updated Cadillac sedans in the months ahead.
