This advancement makes it the first major stadium in Australia to have tower lights with both high-quality white sports lighting and advanced full-color ‘light show’ capabilities.
Adelaide Oval has recently completed a significant lighting upgrade, investing $5 million in a new LED tower lighting system.
This advancement makes it the first major stadium in Australia to have tower lights with both high-quality white sports lighting and advanced full-color ‘light show’ capabilities.
The innovative LED system replaces the older high intensity discharge (HID) lighting, which was last updated in 2014 during the Adelaide Oval redevelopment. The LED technology offers instantaneous on and off switching, providing a consistent and focused light level across the playing field.
Additionally, the new system introduces capabilities such as color, flash, and animation. Importantly, these lights are approximately 40% more energy-efficient than their predecessors, aligning with Adelaide Oval’s commitment to sustainability.
The debut of this full-color lighting will coincide with the highly anticipated New Year’s Eve BBL game, where the Adelaide Strikers will face the Melbourne Stars, accompanied by a performance by Grinspoon.
Adelaide Oval CEO Nick Addison expressed enthusiasm about the upgrade.
“Adelaide Oval has a well-earned reputation as a world-class events and entertainment destination and this upgrade goes a long way to keeping us at the forefront of stadia globally,” he stated.
“We are committed to continually reinvesting in our fan experience to ensure it’s the best it can be, while also delivering on our goals across technology and sustainability. The opportunities this opens up are really exciting – both in terms of giving fans an electric event day experience and helping us attract new and different events to South Australia.”
The installation, completed in just 11 weeks, was a feat achieved by a team of 30 experts from South Australian electrical solutions company CME and project management partner Mott MacDonald, with lighting supplied by Signify Australia.
The process involved abseiling down each tower to manually replace the globes and support systems, while keeping the existing light tower structures.
KOJO, a sports lighting specialist, will be responsible for programming and operating the new lights, integrating them into the existing AV capabilities of Adelaide Oval.
“The previous stadium lighting system was the right solution at the time and has served us well for over a decade,” Nick added.
“LED has since evolved to become the gold standard, and we need to invest in the very best to keep Adelaide Oval and South Australia competitive in the national and international events market. The team has done an exceptional job to deliver this in such a tight timeframe without disrupting game days or daily operations. As far as we’re concerned Adelaide Oval is one of the world’s best and most iconic stadiums, and we’re determined to keep it that way.”
