Apple was reported last week that it has planned to invest US$334 million for the new facility in Taiwan, located in the Longtan section of Hsinchu Science Park. The new factory is believed to focus on Micro LED and Mini LED technologies which Apple aims to apply in its new products.
Taiwanese companies Epistar and AUO as well as other companies of the Mini LED and Micro LED supplier chains are reportedly supporting Apple’s products adopting the next-gen display technologies. Apart from getting closer with its partners, another major reason for Apple to increase investment in Taiwan is to prevent interruption in the R&D process caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Compared to the rest of the world, Taiwan has managed to contain the coronavirus and is less affected. There has been no lockdowns and most of the businesses and production activities continue to operate as usual. As a result, Taiwan becomes a rather secure place for Apple to keep its Micro LED and Mini LED developments going.
LEDinside learned that Apple will intensify verification and laboratory equipment in the new factory in Taiwan. Analyst of LEDinside visited the actual site again last week and found that some part of the building is still under construction.
