Arima Optoelectronics Swaps Blue LEDs for Red Chips

Exiting from cut-throat price competitions in the blue LED lighting segment, LED epitaxial wafer and chip manufacturer Arima Optoelectronics (Arima) has halted manufacturing of blue LED chips altogether and shifted to AlGaInP production, reported DIGITIMES.

Arima closed 40 MOCVDs for manufacturing blue LED wafers and chips, and has transformed 18 MOCVDs for AlGaInP LED wafer manufacturing, stated the company.

The higher technology entry level for AlGaInP LEDs has resulted in fewer competitors, and the more prominent companies in the field have been Osram Opto, San’an Opto and EPISTAR.

Arima’s AlGaInP LEDs will mostly be applied in IR applications including iris recognition, automotive dashboards, brake lamps and direction indicators, plant-growth lights, LED lighting and surveillance. The IR LED chips being manufactured by the company have a wavelength between 810 nm, 850 nm, and 940 nm.

Main revenue sources for the IR LED chips include China (56.6%), Taiwan (19.2%), and South Korea (16.3%), said Arima Optoelectronics.
