Taiwan-based LED manufacturer Epistar's revenue in September rose to NTD 2.476 billion, setting a new record high since April 2015. Its revenue in the third quarter of 2017 also set a new record for the past 12 quarters, reaching NTD 7.057 billion.

A lot of orders were placed in the traditional peak season and the demand hiked during the October 1 long holidays in China, so Epistar's revenue stood out in September. Epistar's revenue in 3Q17 exceeded the investors' expectation for the reasons below. First, Epistar's blue light LED utilization rate remained full. Next, horticultural lighting orders maintained stable, enabling Epistar to provide a sustained supply of AlInGaP-based compound LED. Third, Epistar's product profile was improved.
The demand, however, might slowly drop as the traditional off season comes. Epistar expressed, the demand in the backlight market might fall, but the demand for general lighting and ultra-high brightness AlInGaP-based compound LED will stay high. In addition, chip scale package (CSP) LED gradually becomes new products' mainstream technology, so its shipment scale becomes better than before as expected. Judging by Epistar's existing orders, its shipment in 4Q17 might not be dropping as much as that over the past few years.
As for the outlook of future trends, Epistar believes the demand for automotive LED, infra-red sensor and mini LED backlight applications will continue growing in 2018. Epistar is currently collaborating with customers for mini LED backlight design on large size panels. The earliest time to launch new products might be the first half of 2018.
