LG Establishes New OLED Division

Contradicting earlier reports in late October about LG giving up on the costly OLED TV technology opting for the less costly quantum dot technology, a latest CNET report noted the company was refocusing on OLED technology and even dedicating a new division to developing OLED screens.

According to the company’s display-panel subsidiary LG Display, the new OLED division will be completely focused on commercializing the technology.

LG has shown its ambition to lead in the OLED TV industry, even when many others have backed out. The company’s arch-rival Samsung has chosen QD LCD technology for its TV next year, due to low OLED demands. In contrast, LG is expected to release more OLED TV models in 2015.

LG’s new division will be headed by company’s CTO Yeo Sang-deog, who was promoted to president from executive vice president recently.

The new OLED division will integrate all of the company’s related OLED projects, and a new department to manage OLED buying clients has been formed.

The Korean tech giant will be scaling up OLED panel production by fourfold this month to lower OLED TV prices, and making them a more attractive option to consumers. The company’s 55-inch OLED TV currently costs nearly 3 million won ($2,765).

The report also noted the Korean manufacturer is working hard to minimize burn-in effects.
