Last week a Korean Media, The Investors, reported that LG would release its first Micro LED TV at the IFA electronics trade show in Germany. The news has been confirmed real as LG unveiled its 173-inch Micro LED display module at the show. 

LG Electronics said Wednesday (May 9) its latest OLED TVs released in the United States come with features that allow them to be connected to the Google Assistant voice recognition system.

In recent year, Mini LED has undoubtedly emerged as a new sector where LED companies and panel vendors actively enter. The reason is that the traditional LED backlight has been developing for many years, reaching a bottleneck in technology; the profit is relatively low as well. Meanwhile, OLED displays, which feature thinness and flexibility, are invading into the backlight display market. As the result, manufacturers that do not worked on OLED displays have turned to the development of Mini LED, a new product that is highly competitive in terms of function and cost.

The sentiment is heating up in the high-end TV market as more rumors about Korean suppliers’ next-generation TVs came out. By the end of 2018, Samsung Electronics will release new-generation Micro LED TVs and the price could be as high as USD 300,000. TV makers, especially Samsung and LG Display, are scrambling for changes and quality upgrades for their products. In 2018, the focus of the competition between the two Korean display manufacturers will shift from QLED vs. OLED to Micro LED.

According to the latest report of WitsView, a division of TrendForce, global shipments of branded LCD TV sets for 2017 totaled 211 million units, a decrease of 4.1% compared with prior year. This is a new low since 2014, indicating a bottleneck in the development of TV industry. In 2018, TV brands will focus on large-size, high-resolution products, and also develop high-end products like QLED and OLED TVs, hoping to push sales and regain profits by specifications upgrade.
