Samsung introduced its "world's thinnest" 3.9mm-thick 40-inch LCD TV based on LED technology at FPD International 2009.
The new design uses LED based edge-lighting along with new optical film manufacturing process to spread the light evenly behind the screen. The luminance, contrast and frame frequency of the panel are 400cd/m2, 5,000:1 and 120Hz, respectively.
According to Samsung, the new technology 'gathers' the light toward the center of the screen and reflects it forward through a light-guide plate for extra precision. However, the company declined to comment on technical details such as the number and alignment of LEDs and the optical elements.
The ultra-slim TV supports a Full HD resolution along with a 5000:1 contrast ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. The 3.9mm screen is in prototype form currently.
