2024 Volvo EX30: Prices, specs and release date

News Source:

  • New Volvo EX30 is an electric small SUV
  • All-new entry-level model to offer Scandi-cool styling and an EV range of around 275 miles
  • Full reveal scheduled for 7 June
  • Open for reservations this summer with prices likely to start from under £40,000

The new Volvo EX30 is an exciting all-new electric SUV from the fast-evolving premium Swedish brand. Positioned below the existing Volvo XC40 Recharge, this new entrant is targeting a younger, more urban customer base than Volvo’s traditional buyers.

The aim is for the new Volvo EX30 to capitalise on the firm’s growing Scandi-cool image and bring in fresh buyers who may never before have considered a Volvo. It is potentially a golden opportunity for Volvo, as key rivals Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have all elected not to directly compete in the entry-level EV SUV sector.

Instead, the new Volvo EX30’s rivals will come from the future new electric MINI Countryman and MINI Aceman, the Smart #1, the new Hyundai Kona Electric and even the long-rumoured Tesla Model 2.

2024 Volvo EX30 prices and release date

The new Volvo EX30 will be fully revealed on 7 June 2023. Reservations will open in key markets, including the UK, as soon as the unboxing is complete. First deliveries are expected from 2024.

The new Volvo EX30 will sit below the existing Volvo XC40 range. The current pure electric Volvo XC40 Recharge costs from £46,505. Volvo EX30 prices are therefore expected to start from under £40,000.

The new Volvo EX30 will also be offered via all-inclusive monthly subscription through the Care by Volvo package. This is expected to prove popular amongst the EX30’s target younger customers, who embrace Netflix-style subscription packages.

2024 Volvo EX30 styling, interior and technology

The new Volvo EX30 will build on the clean, minimalist styling already seen in the new Volvo EX90 luxury SUV. Volvo is seeking a purer, more reductive look for its EX-branded electric cars, with smooth surfaces and aerodynamically-efficient details.

The new Volvo EX30 will still have a strong stance though, as previewed by the teaser shots officially released by the firm. These show a squat rear end with the new Volvo ‘split’ vertical LED tail lights, and chunky rear shoulders that give it a strong, solid appearance.

The new Volvo EX30 appears to have deep body sides and shallow windows. This, combined with large alloy wheels, will give it a sporty look. The roofline curves gently rearwards and a detailed roof spoiler will aid aero efficiency.

The new Volvo EX30 will also get a characterful LED light array at the front. The firm has teased what appear to be a series of LED rectangles stretching part-way across the front. They appear to be part of a fun, pixelated variation of the Volvo Thor’s hammer headlight design.

Other design details of the new Volvo EX30 include a contrast roof colour, conventional doorhandles rather than expensive pop-out handles, and a rising rear window line that feeds into a Volvo XC40-style C-pillar.

Inside, the new Volvo EX30 will have a high-tech feel similar to the new Volvo EX90 (pictured above), with a Google Android Automotive-based infotainment system as the centrepiece. This setup is already used on other Volvos, and it allows the firm to be really flexible in the services it offers.

Expect the new Volvo EX30 to offer plenty of embedded Google apps, such as the Google voice assistant and Google Maps, along with other third-party apps such as Spotify. Regular Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring will be included too.

Volvo has teased the sustainable upholstery of the new Volvo EX30, which will be a combination of eco textiles and vegan leather. The new Volvo EX30 will also carry a little Swedish flag embroidered onto the seat back, in homage to the firm’s heritage.

2024 Volvo EX30 electric motors, performance and range

The new Volvo EX30 will be a pure electric SUV. As signified by the ‘EX’ name, there will be no petrol or hybrid alternatives. It will be the third pure electric new Volvo, following the Volvo C40 and Volvo EX90.

The new Volvo EX30 will be based on the same electric underpinnings as the new Smart #1. This indicates there will be two versions, a single-motor rear-wheel drive version with 272ps, and a dual-motor all-wheel drive version with 428ps.

Even the new Volvo EX30 single motor will have ample performance. 0-62mph acceleration is expected to take less than seven seconds. The new Volvo EX30 AWD will offer genuinely vivid performance, with 0-62mph acceleration in around 4.0 seconds.

The new Volvo EX30 is likely to share the same 62kWh battery as the Smart #1. This will give an electric range of around 275 miles for the single motor variant, and around 250 miles for the dual motor setup. The driving range in cities, where most new Volvo EX30 will spend the majority of their time, will exceed 300 miles.

The new Volvo EX30 will be able to use 150kW DC rapid chargers. This will allow the battery to be topped up from a nearly-flat 10% state to a generously-charged 80% state in under 30 minutes.

A sophisticated camera in the door mirror of the new Volvo EX30 has been teased. This indicates Volvo is set to offer advanced driver assist technology, similar to Tesla, in the new EX30 – potentially including a degree of hands-off autonomous driving.
