LG Unveils New ‘Magnit’ Micro LED Screen - Complete With Luxury Bang & Olufsen Speakers

News Source:

While we’re used to finding ultra-expensive luxury speakers, amps and so on in the hi-fi world, the TV world is typically relatively mainstream with the range of options it offers. Or it was until Micro LED technology came along.

These exciting new displays have been a dazzling but frankly both impractical and unaffordable staple of technology shows for years now - but recent evidence suggests that it’s finally trying to break out into the consumer marketplace. A few weeks back I reported on the launch of the C Seed N1: A mindblowing outdoor Micro LED display available in 137 and 165-inch sizes with a starting price of $233,000. And today LG has announced the ‘Magnit’: A huge 4K Micro LED screen that will ship as standard with a flagship Bang & Olufsen speaker system.

The Magnit’s 136-inch size immediately marks it out as a screen for a very large house or dedicated cinema room - as well as reminding us of the ongoing difficulties associated with shrinking Micro LED’s already tiny structures down to a point where you might be able to get a 4K Micro LED TV in a more manageable, mainstream size.

The way Micro LED technology works means that the Magnit screen can appear without a bezel round it, while its edges are made from brushed aluminium. To keep the screen design as minimal as possible, the Magnit ships with an external Media Box designed to deliver a similarly luxurious finish and understated feel. This control box includes LG’s webOS smart system.

Anyone who’s seen Micro LED screens in action knows how exciting they are. Combining the light, contrast and colour accuracy of self-emissive pixels with all-inorganic materials capable of supporting vastly more brightness than any other current screen technology, Micro LED displays always look like the future of TV. Right up to the point where you find out how much they cost.

LG hasn’t yet released a price for the Magnit, but you can get some idea of where it’s going from the speaker system LG has chosen to partner with its massive new screen. Bang & Olufsen is renowned across the world for being a premium AV brand, but even by B&O’s standards the Beolab 90 speakers LG has chosen to ship with the Magnit screen are seriously high end.

These huge, built-to-order floorstanding speakers each boast an ultra-striking multi-angled design, an astonishing claimed 8200W of power, 18 premium drivers, 14 channels of 300W ICE amplifiers, and four channels of 1000W Class D Heliox amps. Bought separately, you can expect a Beolab 90s to set you back around $120,000/£93,000 a pair…

If numbers like that (for just the speakers, remember) haven’t got you running for the hills and you fancy trying an LG Magnit before you buy, you can find the whole system on show at both the Bang & Olufsen in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the LG Business Innovation Center in Dubai. Plus a further system is scheduled to be presented in the Bang & Olufsen showroom in Costa Mesa, California in September.
