NYUST Researchers Proposed a New Control and Driving System to Improve Micro LED Refresh Rate

Recently, researchers at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (NYUST) have developed a Micro LED control and driving system based on block addressing to enhance the processing and throughput capabilities of Micro LED screens for signal display, thereby enhancing the refresh rate of Micro LEDs.

Compared to LCD and OLED display technologies, Micro LED features a faster response time and can achieve high refresh rates.

In order to further improve the refresh rate of Micro LED displays, researchers at NYUST proposed a new driving system. Unlike conventional line-by-line scanning, the new system only updates the blocks of the screen that are active or undergoing changes, while the static blocks remain unchanged. By only processing the changing blocks, the system significantly reduces the amount of signal data that needs to be transmitted and processed, enabling more efficient use of bandwidth and significantly increasing the display’s refresh rate.

The core technology of the proposed system involves the innovative use of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), providing the system with higher flexibility and speed for processing displayed signals.

Experimental results showed that, with the new driving system technology, the processing speed of the Micro LED display module reached 600 to 1100 frames per second (FPS), depending on the motion characteristics of the video content. The processing rate represents a significant improvement compared to existing technologies, opening the door to a smoother, more dynamic display experience.
