Mojo Vision Demonstrating Micro-LED Advancements at Display Week

News Source:

Single panel RGB at 6350 pixels per inch developed for AI-powered smartglasses

SARATOGA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mojo Vision, the high-performance micro-LED company, today announced significant display technology advancements at SID Display Week, in San Jose, CA. The company will demonstrate a monolithic red, green and blue (RGB) panel with 4µm pixel pitch, representing a density of 6350 pixels per inch (ppi). The company is also demonstrating a technology enhancement that substantially improves brightness and reduces power consumption by up to 5x compared to a traditional LED structure. The demonstrations represent another major step in Mojo’s micro-LED development progress as the company drives the technology towards commercialization.

Display technology for AI-powered smartglasses

Mojo developed a monolithic RGB panel with 4µm pixels and 1.3µm sub-pixels using its proprietary Quantum Dot (QD) and integration processes. Designed to enable slim smartglass form factors, this compact display addresses current consumer pain points such as high ambient viewing, size, weight and battery life. With 6350 ppi, this single-panel micro-LED display will enable a crisp and vivid user experience. This sets a new standard as AR glasses on the market today offer ~4000 ppi or less.

“As the XR industry continues to push for smaller, less obtrusive form factors, we need to get to smartglasses that look and feel just like the eyeglasses that most people wear today,” said Nikhil Balram, CEO of Mojo Vision. “But functionality and features like brightness, resolution, field of view, and integration of AI are also critical. Today’s smartglasses are starting to include AI in the form of audio input and output, but visual interaction with AI will be an important enhancement to the user experience, for true AI Glasses.”

“Over half of the brain’s cortex is devoted to visual processing, and the possibility of incorporating rich AI with visual feedback into future smartglasses will create captivating new products,” continued Balram. “The 4µm pixel size in Mojo’s monolithic RGB panels is critical to enabling a lightweight, compact, energy efficient and bright display, which will be key to making glasses fully ‘smart’ without sacrificing visual-appeal and comfort.”

Brightness enhancement and power reduction using Micro-Lens-Array (MLA)

Mojo will also demonstrate the substantial performance enhancements made possible through its use of ultra-tiny LEDs. LEDs naturally disperse light in many directions, leading to wasted light. Less than 7% of LED’s output enters the AR optics and reaches the human eye for visual processing. By using an MLA with lenses that can be substantially larger than tiny LEDs, Mojo’s displays can deliver up to five times as much light to the human eye, resulting in a robust increase in brightness and energy efficiency.

Mojo will demonstrate this enhancement by placing an MLA with 3µm pitch on top of blue LED and red QD arrays with 1.3µm sub-pixels, and show side-by-side comparisons of the brightness with and without the MLA. This is a significant milestone in creating a commercially scalable, high-performance, and reliable full-color micro-LED display.

“Mojo is advancing human interaction with technology by creating the world’s smallest and densest micro-LED displays,” said Dr. Achin Bhowmik, president of the Society for Information Display and Mojo Vision Board of Directors member. “As smartglasses with compelling AI features gain popularity, the market is primed for the next generation of displays. Mojo’s advancements will provide significant benefits to manufacturers as they incorporate micro-LED into the next generation of product.”

Both demonstrations will be available at Mojo Vision’s private meeting room at Display Week 2024 from May 14-16, 2024.
