LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city of Louisville is letting its lights shine.

Thursday, Mayor Craig Greenberg and Rep. Morgan McGarvey joined officials from Metro Public Works, the Louisville Metro Police Department and Louisville Downtown Partnership to highlight one of the city's newest projects.

The underpass at Main Street, between Jackson and Hancock, now includes LED lights. Officials said the lights, which can change colors like the Big Four Bridge, will be used to celebrate teams and events, as well as enhance public safety.

"It could be purple, for LouCity and the Bats. I'm confident it can be red for the Cardinals, it can be green for St. Patrick's Day," McGarvey, D-Kentucky District 3, said. "There's so many things we can do. It can provide that coolness, that allure to our city while, again, making sure it has that public safety benefit."

The city provided funding for lighting for the first two underpasses -- one on Main Street and another on Market Street. McGarvey was able to help secure more than $1.6 million to support two more underpass projects in the Downtown area, located on Jefferson and Jackson Streets.
