Epistar, one of Taiwan’s leading LED maker, has reportedly signed a contract to supply more LED chips to Samsung for LCD TV backlights in 2010, according to industry sources.
Epistar chairman Lee Biing-jye said the demand for LED backlights will grow significantly from 2011 to 2013, mainly fueled by LCD TVs. Securing the contract with Samsung, the company will continue supplying more than half of the LEDs used in LCD TV backlights in the world in 2010.
The company also noted that the LED supply is likely to lag behind demand from 2011, considering that the number of LEDs used in an LCD TV is 30 times that of an LED-backlit notebook PC.
In addition to Samsung, the firm also received floods of orders from AUO, Innolux. and TPV.
