Hot Picks of the Week May 2-6

Highlights this week:

It has been confirmed that Philips Lighting will be issuing an IPO instead of being put up for sale, Philips will gradually sell more than 25% of its stake in the lighting business. Additionally, the company’s IPO announcement will disappoint several investors, such as Go Scale Capital, Melrose, and Apollo to name a few that had previously been interested in submitting bidding proposals. The company’s lighting arm in Thailand has also decided to shut down its fluorescent bulb factory as market penetration of LEDs escalate in the local market to more than 34%.

Philips LED component business, Lumileds, is expanding its global distribution network as the parent company continues its search for a potential buyer. Lumileds announced this week that it had sealed a global distribution agreement with Arrow Electronics.

While Nichia and Everlight will not be arriving to a patent dispute settlement anytime soon, Cree and Harvatek have set their differences aside. Harvatek has agreed to paying patent royalties for Cree’s white LEDs, but the finances involved was undisclosed.

Samsung seems to have given up on OLED TVs in the short term, and is embracing quantum dot technology next year. The company announced it will not be releasing any new OLED TV lineups next year, and will be focused on QD TVs instead. For more please see below:
