Eye on the Growing Mini LED Market, Panel Makers to Reduce Cost and Extend Product Diversity

New display technologies Mini LED and Micro LED are bringing new opportunities to the industry. Many companies are thus trying to develop new strategies and form alliances with the aim to occupy a leading position in the market.

Recently, Taiwan-based LED companies Epistar and Lextar announced their integration for leveraging their expertise to accelerate technology development in Mini LED and Micro LED technologies, hoping to win more business opportunities. Apart from LED manufacturers, panel makers have also geared up to push commercialization of the new display technologies.

AUO, who have shipped a 32-inch and a 17.3-inch Mini LED backlight display for gaming monitors and notebooks earlier this year, noted that it is expecting to launch QHD Mini LED backlight display products for different applications covering professional notebook and more in 2021. However, according to AUO, the current challenge of Mini LED backlight display commercialization is the production cost. Comparing to LCD display, cost of Mini LED backlight display is still higher in a double-digit percentage.

In order to reduce cost of Mini LED backlight display, AUO said that they are optimizing product design and trying to cut the number of LEDs used in one backlight unit. Once the cost issue overcome, Mini LED backlight display is expected to achieve a better penetration rate in the market.

Meanwhile, Innolux also plans to advance its Mini LED display products. The company’s active matrix technology enables more local dimming zones for Mini LED backlight display comparing to passive matrix and improves display performance and quality. The technology has been adopted in Mini LED fine-pitch displays for PIDs. Innolux is also working with its clients to apply the technology for automotive displays ant TVs.

Smart display applications are another target of Innolux. The company is expanding AI integrated displays for smart mobility, medication, entertainment and retail to create a new further with innovative display technology.
