Cheap LED Bulbs Disrupt DAB Radio Signals

News Source:

Cheap Chinese LED bulbs can disrupt DAB radio signals, and stop the radio from working, according to a report by the Telegraph.

The root of the issue is Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), which first emerged in Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) that were sold in early 1990s. LEDs are once again highlighting EMC issues, as DAB radio grows in popularity. Depending on how LED driver circuits are designed, the electronic driver circuits in LEDs can cause EMC issues.

While EMC issues are rarely found in branded LED bulbs manufactured in EU that are certified with the CE mark and labelled as EMC compliant, cheap Chinese LED bulbs do not always meet these standards and can cause interference.

There is no easy solution in the short term. In fact, the article projected the issue will become aggravated as LED bulbs become widespread and non-compliant bulbs bans will not take place anytime soon. However, since the bulb effects are localized, users can eliminate these unwanted effects by switching to EMC complaint bulbs. Also moving the DAB radio from the lamps, and ensuring antennas are not close to any mains cables or wall sockets. Also, it will be a qualified electrician responsibility to ensure the bulbs are interference free if the person installed the lighting system.
