Danville Switching to LED Lights

The City of Danville is likely to become the first LED city in Virginia, the United States.

City officials say that the city has received a 50 thousand dollar grant for it to switch to new LED lights in different parts of the city. LEDs use less energy, last longer and are more environmentally friendly. So far, they've been installed at the water plant, and at the adult detention center.

The officials said that they plan to use LEDs for street lights eventually. Though these lights are more expensive than traditional lights, they'll save more in the long run, the officials said.

"I don't think the city can afford to all of a sudden go out and change all of the light bulbs in the city to LEDs but as we're looking at projects and looking where they make sense we'll do them piece at a time and gradually the savings will grow." said Kevin Martin from Danville Utilities.

The city hasn't officially been declared an LED city, but they are expecting it to happen sometime next week.
