Mumbai: Western Railway to Replace Fluorescent Tube Lights with LEDs

News Source:

The Western Railway, which operates in Mumbai, India is planning to replace less efficient fluorescent tube lights with LEDs, according to a report by mid day.

“We have replaced about 500 fluorescent tubelights with LED ones so far,” said Shailendra Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), WR.

Authorities project the brighter LED tubes will lead to greater energy savings and costs, despite its nearly fourfold higher initial costs. A LED tube light costs around Rs 1,100 (US $17.91) compared to the cheaper priced fluorescent light’s Rs 250.

However, the LED tube lights are expected to last at least five years, while the fluorescent light typically has an 18 month life span.
