On March 19, BOE HC Semi’s Micro LED factory, the world’s first 6-inch Micro LED mass production line, held its product delivery ceremony in Jinwan District, Zhuhai. During the ceremony, BOE HC Semi unveiled its latest Micro LED products and officially delivered Chip on Wafer (COW) and Micro Pixel Display (MPD) products to customers.
According to available information, the BOE HC Semi Micro LED factory was invested in and built by BOE HC Semi Optoelectronics (Guangdong) Co., Ltd. The factory commenced construction at the end of July 2023, and after key milestones such as topping out, equipment installation, and product testing, it achieved product delivery in just 20 months.
The BOE HC Semi Micro LED factory primarily produces Micro LED wafers and pixel devices, targeting ultra-large and ultra-small high-definition display applications, including large-scale commercial displays, AR/VR head-mounted displays, and wearable devices.
Once fully operational, the factory is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 24,000 sets of 6-inch Micro LED wafers and 45,000kk units of Micro LED pixel devices.
The successful mass production of BOE HC Semi’s Micro LED factory has been made possible with the strong support of the Zhuhai Municipal Government and the Jinwan District Government.
Mr. Zhang Zhaohong, Chairman of BOE HC Semi, emphasized that the company will adhere to a “technology + manufacturing” dual-engine strategy to attract more high-quality enterprises to settle in Zhuhai. The Micro LED project being delivered is an important platform for BOE HC Semi’s strategic deployment in next-generation display technology, offering immense potential and possibilities.
Four Key Advantages of the World’s First 6-inch Micro LED Mass Production Line
Micro LED is regarded as the ultimate display technology, featuring high brightness, high contrast, fast response time, low power consumption, high reliability, and long lifespan. Compared to LCD, OLED, and Mini LED technologies, Micro LED excels in image resolution, power efficiency, flexible design, environmental adaptability, and industry chain compatibility.
However, as Micro LED technology is still in its early development stage, the upstream and downstream LED industries are working to overcome mass production challenges. As a key player in the LED industry, BOE HC Semi is driving Micro LED industrialization with an advanced production layout.
As the world’s first 6-inch Micro LED mass production line and the first integrated chip and packaging module production line, the BOE HC Semi Micro LED factory boasts significant technological advantages in MPD packaging, automated production, mass transfer, and domestic equipment localization, enabling it to lead the industry in Micro LED mass production:
-MPD Packaging Reduces Micro LED Application Complexity
MPD (Micro Pixel Display), also known as MIP (Micro LED in Package), utilizes mass transfer technology to transfer Micro LED chips onto a substrate for packaging. The chips are then cut into smaller modules, undergo color sorting and mixing, and are finally mounted onto display panels. This approach significantly reduces the manufacturing cost of fine-pitch LED displays while increasing production efficiency.
BOE HC Semi’s Micro LED factory adopts the MPD product format, addressing some of the challenges of COB (Chip on Board) packaging by substantially reducing packaging costs and precision requirements for downstream manufacturers. This enhances synergy across the display chip industry’s supply chain.
-Continuous Optimization of Mass Transfer Efficiency
Accurately and rapidly transferring massive amounts of Micro LED chips to target positions is a core challenge in Micro LED production. To tackle this, BOE HC Semi’s Micro LED factory has invested in more than 20 mass transfer and auxiliary equipment units. The production line integrates semi-automatic and fully automated mass transfer stations, reducing labor costs while improving precision, thereby increasing overall production yield.
-Highly Automated Production Line
BOE HC Semi’s Micro LED factory is the industry’s first Micro LED chip manufacturing plant to achieve full production line automation. Through the integration of MCS, RTD, and EAP automation systems with automated transport, electronic shelving, and lifter equipment, the factory enhances productivity, ensures product quality stability, reduces operational costs, and improves worker safety.
-High Level of Domestic Equipment Localization
To efficiently establish its Micro LED production line, BOE HC Semi has achieved over 80% localization in its manufacturing equipment, significantly reducing both initial and long-term project costs.
Additionally, by utilizing domestically produced equipment at scale, the factory ensures the confidentiality of key Micro LED production processes and fosters the coordinated development of China’s Micro LED industry. This will further strengthen China’s leadership in the global Micro LED market.
Conclusion
The successful product delivery from BOE HC Semi’s Micro LED factory marks a significant milestone in the commercialization of Micro LED technology.
By leveraging its advantages in MPD packaging, mass transfer, automation, and China’s domestic equipment localization, BOE HC Semi has overcome key challenges in Micro LED mass production and is fostering industry chain integration and collaboration.
Moving forward, BOE HC Semi will continue to deepen its focus on Micro LED technology, injecting new momentum into the evolution of global display technologies.
