AIXTRON AG announced that Changelight Co., Ltd., ordered an AIXTRON Planetary Reactor system for the production of Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) LED. The Changelight order is for an AIX 2600G3 system in the 49x2-inch wafer configuration. The tool was delivered in the third quarter 2009 to the company’s state-of-the-art new facilities in Xiamen (Xiang An) Torch Industry Park of Fujian Province, China.

Singapore’s Temasek Holdings Private Limited will spend 284.7 billion won ($242 million) to acquire a 12 percent stake in S. Korean’s Seoul Semiconductor and a 9 percent stake in affiliate Seoul Optodevice, according to an article on Reuters.

DOMINANT introduces the new high intensity and cost competitive 5mm round and oval lamp InGaN LED series Lxx-Hxxxx as alternative to their Lxx-Nxxxx products. At an operating current of 20 mA, the 5mm round LEDs feature a typical luminous intensity of 4000mcd for blue, 12000mcd for true green. For their 5mm oval lamp part are two versions of viewing angle available; 70/35° and 100/40°.

Philips Lumileds has announced broad release of its white automotive rated LUXEON Rebel LEDs. Intended for use in automotive applications such as daytime running lamps, position lamps, backup lamps and interior lighting, these LUXEON Rebel parts provide superior design flexibility and are engineered and tested to exceed automotive requirements for reliability, performance, and lifetime. Each part conforms to both the SAE and ECE color specifications and has complete PPAP documentation.

Today, at the annual Cree (Nasdaq:CREE) shareholder meeting, Cree Chairman and CEO Chuck Swoboda demonstrated an A-lamp LED light bulb with the highest lumen output and efficacy reported in the industry. The bulb produces 969 lumens at an impressive 102 lumens per watt, which is the light output equivalent to a 65-watt incandescent bulb, yet it uses only 9.5 watts.

The South Korean electronics giant LG has chosen Thailand as the first Asean production base for its latest range of televisions.

Samsung introduced its "world's thinnest" 3.9mm-thick 40-inch LCD TV based on LED technology at FPD International 2009. The new design uses LED based edge-lighting along with new optical film manufacturing process to spread the light evenly behind the screen. The luminance, contrast and frame frequency of the panel are 400cd/m2, 5,000:1 and 120Hz, respectively.

The HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair opened with 1,788 exhibitors from 31 countries and regions. Cree, Inc., a market leader in LED lighting, is redefining expectations of lighting-class LEDs with the addition of new 100+ lumen XLamp(R) XP-C LEDs to the company's line of XLamp LEDs. This addition shifts Cree's entire XLamp portfolio of lighting-class LEDs into the 100+ lumen range, at 350 mA.

Lunera Lighting, a designer, manufacturer, and marketer of next-generation digital LED lighting, is now selling its ultra-thin, energy-efficient LED fixtures to the commercial general lighting market.

Tyntek Corp, a Taiwan-based LED chipmaker, recently said it is seeking to acquire its local rival Ubilux to expand its output of LEDs for panel backlighting, according to an article on Taipei Times. The acquisition will make Tyntek Taiwan’s third-largest LED chipmaker, after Epistar Corp and Optotech Corp, the report said.

Nu Horizons Electronics has signed a distribution agreement with Sharp Microelectronics Europe for the UK and Nordic territories. Nu Horizons currently distributes Sharp's electronic components in North America. The new deal marks the distributor's first major LED, optoelectronics and display module franchise in European markets.

The new LED-based BeoVision 10 from Bang & Olufsen is a slim, fully integrated TV solution with a classic Bang & Olufsen identity developed specifically for wall placement.  

Lite-On Technology and Everlight Electronics, two of the major LED providers based in Taiwan, are reportedly to be supplying SMD LEDs to Korea’s Samsung and LG from the fourth quarter this year. The two companies will supply LEDs mainly for backlights of 46/47- and 52/55-inch TVs to the two Korean TV makers, according to the report.

MH&W International has added new TP-S3LS ultra-low silicone gap fillers to its line of thermal interface materials. TP-S3LS pads contain less than 50 parts per million of silicone while providing 3.0 W/mK of themal conductivity between hot components and their heat sinks.
